The Importance of Winterizing Diesel Fuel
Diesel fuel is chemically very different from gasoline. There are some
obvious differences; one of the most noticeable to anyone whose has ever fueled
a diesel is the distinct odour. There are also some differences that are
subtler. One of the differences is how some of the properties of diesel
fuel change with temperature.
Diesel fuel that has not been properly, stored "winterized" or
"conditioned" by the fuel supplier may cloud or cause water
contamination problems n the fuel system at low temperatures.
How to Winterize Your Diesel Fuel Properly
To avoid this situation, it is recommended that you add Stanadyne Performance
Formula All Season Fuel Conditioner, available at authorized Volkswagen
dealerships, directly into your fuel tank.
Make sure to add the correct amount: 8 ounces(235 ml) of additive per 15
Gallond(60ltr) of diesel fuel. Increase to 12 ounces(355 ml) for
exceptionally cold conditions.
Caution: All diesel fuel additives are not the same. Some contain
alcohol, which will damage the diesel injection pump.
It is important to winterize your fuel before any problems are noticed.
If not, more extensive service procedures may be required to resolve fuel system
problems after they have occurred.
